Livelihood / Background / Obituary:
Elsie J. Arleth, 86, of Gulfport, passed away on Friday, November 4, 2005 in Montgomery, Alabama where she and her family had evacuated prior to Hurricane Katrina. Elsie was a loving, adventurous girl and woman, who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to parents who had emigrated as children from England and Denmark. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, arts and crafts, traveling, singing, laughing, good friends and sweets. She and her much loved husband, Bernard, lived in New Orleans for 40+ years where they were active members of several carnival krewes, civil and catholic organizations. The Alzheimer's disease that was diagnosed in 1997 brought Elsie and Bernard to Gulfport to be near their "children": son, Curt, his wife, Cecile, and their children, Melissa and Chris. Although Elsie was not the youngest in her family, her 2 brothers and 5 sisters all passed away before her. Her beloved husband, Bernard, preceded Elsie in death but he never left her heart. As the Alzheimer's took her mobility, thoughts and speech, his name was one she could always say. In her last years, she lived with her son and his family and was lovingly cared for by them, family friends who helped with her daily care, neighbors, the staff of Memorial Hospital Hospice, the staff of Da'Vees Home, and the parish family of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. In Montgomery, the Odyssey Hospice and the Crowne Health Nursing Home staffs lovingly cared for Elsie after Katrina made it impossible for Elsie to return to her home. Donations in Elsie's name can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of the South, 4803 Harrison Circle, Gulfport, MS 39507 or St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 2414 17th St., Gulfport, MS 39501. A visitation will be held Thursday, November 10, 2005, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Gulfport from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Lakelawn Park and Mausoleum in Metairie, LA. Riemann Memorial Funeral Home, Hwy 49N, Gulfport is in charge of arrangements. An online register may be viewed and signed via Riemannfuneralhomes.com. Published in The Sun Herald on 11/8/2005.
